Personal Goal Statement

My name is Alice O’Brien and I am enthusiastically searching for a mechanical engineering internship position for summer 2019. I am a junior engineering student at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Miami has challenged me with rigorous engineering classes and innovative projects, and I am eager to take on new challenges and apply what I have learned in a broader context.

As an undergraduate, I have worked on several mechanical engineering design projects that have helped me develop strong skills in MATLAB and Autodesk Inventor. These design projects have both improved my technical skills, and enhanced my abilities as a team member and leader. For example, I was the team leader for my Computational Methods design project last semester. This position involved assuring that all stages of the design project were completed and turned in on time, resolving conflicts among team members, and scheduling meetings, as well as communicating ideas and obstacles with our professor outside of class time. I enjoyed my position on this project and gained greater understanding of the importance of team communication and networking.

My goals for next summer include enhancing my technical and problem solving skills, ideally in a real world setting where I can forge professional relationships with likeminded people. I am excited about the prospect of taking the first step from academia to industry and all of the challenges that it will entail. Currently, I am interested in learning more about a potential career in technical sales, but I am open to any opportunity that will allow me to network and apprentice with more experienced engineers and business professionals in a challenging and intellectually rigorous setting.
